Located at 1,000 meters above sea level, Sfruz is a small gem of the Val di Non in Trentino. A village suspended between sky and earth, surrounded by larch and fir forests, where the rhythm of nature still sets the pace of life.
Sfruz is a picturesque and authentic Alpine village in Trentino, located on the green Predaia plateau between Mount Roen and Corno di Tres in the Val di Non. Its unique position offers a stunning balcony view over the Brenta Dolomites and the surrounding mountains. It enjoys a dry and healthy climate, making it an ideal place to spend a summer or winter holiday in nature and tranquility.
Sfruz is one of the oldest towns in the Val di Non, as confirmed by archaeological excavations that uncovered typical Roman tile tombs. The village has preserved its original urban structure, a living testimony of its long history.
The historic center of Sfruz is characterized by rural houses and noble buildings, such as those flanking Piazza Degasperi, enriched with stone portals, archways, wooden structures, frescoes, and 16th-century inscriptions. Behind the church runs Via Predaia, where you can admire a 1704 portal with a coat of arms and an unusual pointed arch. At the top of the street, beyond the playground, there's a high-relief of Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners.
The parish church of Saint Agatha, designed by Pietro Bianchi (1766) and decorated by Metodio Ottolini, is an important landmark for the village. Documented as early as the 1500s, the church features a simple facade with an arched portal adorned with two flower vases and a marble statue of the saint. The interior, in 18th-century Baroque Renaissance style, is divided into three bays by pilasters. Next to the presbytery stands the 1747 bell tower, a five-story square tower topped with a pointed pyramid, housing a set of four bells.
In addition to being famous for its potatoes, Sfruz boasts a prestigious artisanal tradition. Among the most important activities are goldsmithing, woodworking, and especially the production of large ceramic stoves, made since the Renaissance period and sold in Austria, South Tyrol, and Lombardy.
